EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th century engraving depicts the Italian revolutionary figure, Tommaso Aniello, better known as Masaniello, the leader of the Neapolitan fishermen's revolt against the Habsburg-Spanish rule in Naples. Masaniello's rebellion, which began in 1647, was a significant event in the modern age of Italian history and marked the beginning of the end of Spanish domination in Naples. Born in the fishing village of Mondragone, Masaniello was a humble fisherman who led his fellow Neapolitans in a series of uprisings against the Spanish authorities. The spark for the rebellion was the exorbitant taxes and the exploitation of the local population by the Spanish rulers. Masaniello's charisma and leadership skills soon turned the initial protests into a full-blown rebellion, which spread throughout Naples and its surrounding areas. The engraving, created by the skilled hand of the German engraver, Polhey, in the 19th century, captures the intensity and determination in Masaniello's gaze. The vibrant colors of the print add to the image's striking visual appeal, making it a captivating representation of this pivotal figure in Italian history. Masaniello's rebellion, although ultimately unsuccessful, is remembered as a symbol of Neapolitan resistance against foreign rule and a precursor to the larger Italian unification movement. The engraving serves as a powerful reminder of the complex political landscape of Europe during the 17th century and the role of ordinary people in shaping the course of history. Masaniello's legacy continues to inspire generations of Italians and is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit in the face of oppression.
