EDITORS COMMENTS
In this impression of a Carboniferous limestone sea, artist Bridget Kempster invites us to explore the rich and diverse underwater world that existed some 354 to 290 million years ago. The scene is set in Europe, during a time when the continent was covered by warm, shallow seas teeming with life. At the heart of this vibrant ecosystem are schools of fish, their scales shimmering in the daytime sunlight that filters down from the surface. These ancient creatures, with their varied shapes and sizes, dart among the coral formations, their fins cutting through the water with grace and agility. Among the corals, crinoids, or sea lilies, take center stage. These echinoderms, with their elegant, feathery arms, gracefully sway in the gentle currents, filtering food from the water. Crinoids were a dominant feature of the Carboniferous seas, and their remains are often found in abundance in the fossil record. The scene is further enriched by the presence of cephalopods, such as the ammonoids. These coleoid cephalopods, with their distinctive spiral shells, are well represented in the Carboniferous period. The ammonites, in particular, were highly successful and diverse, occupying various ecological niches in the ancient seas. Other inhabitants of this Carboniferous seascape include various coelenterates, such as jellyfish and anemones. These simple, yet fascinating organisms, with their tentacles and stinging cells, played a crucial role in the food chain and contributed to the overall complexity of the ecosystem. This stunning artwork by Bridget Kempster offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the world was vastly different, yet teeming with life and wonder. The abundance of fish, corals, crinoids, and other ancient creatures in this Carboniferous limestone sea is a testament to the incredible diversity and resilience of life on Earth.
