HEATHROW AIRPORT, B E A SERVICING HANGAR, HEATHROW, HILLINGDON, GREATER LONDON. The BEA aircraft servicing hangar at Heathrow Airport during construction, showing the roof supported on octagonal columns and lattice girders of the partially constructed west wall.
In October 1969 Laing announced that its Industrial Engineering Branch had been awarded a contract for construction of an aircraft servicing hangar for British European Airways at Heathrow Airport. It was the companys second major contract at Heathrow, following the completion of the BEA and BOAC cargo terminal. The hangar was designed to accommodate new airbus jets and existing aircraft. The roof was built on the ground and was raised by British Lift Slab, using hydraulic jacks, over 8 days in November 1970. Once at a height of 20.5m, the roof was supported by octagonal columns, the bases of which had been sunk into 75ft shafts. Braithwaite engineers manufactured the steelwork for the columns and roof

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable construction of the BEA aircraft servicing hangar at Heathrow Airport in Greater London. Taken during its development, the image showcases the partially constructed west wall, revealing the intricate lattice girders and octagonal columns that support the impressive roof structure. In October 1969, Laing's Industrial Engineering Branch proudly announced their contract to build this state-of-the-art hangar for British European Airways. This marked their second major project at Heathrow Airport after successfully completing the BEA and BOAC cargo terminal. The primary objective was to create a facility capable of accommodating both new airbus jets and existing aircraft. The ingenuity behind this construction is truly awe-inspiring. The roof itself was meticulously built on solid ground before being raised into position using hydraulic jacks operated by British Lift Slab over a span of eight days in November 1970. Once elevated to an astonishing height of 20.5 meters, it found support from sturdy octagonal columns anchored deep within 75-foot shafts. Braithwaite engineers played a crucial role in manufacturing the steelwork required for both these columns and the roof structure itself, showcasing their expertise and commitment to delivering exceptional results. Preserved within Historic England Archive, this photograph offers us a glimpse into an era where engineering marvels like this hangar were brought to life through meticulous planning and skilled craftsmanship.
