Installing a wall panel JLP01_14_00230

HULME, MANCHESTER. A block of 12M Jespersen flats under construction in Hulme, showing a wall panel with inset windows about to be hoisted into position.
In 1963, John Laing and Son Ltd bought the rights to the Danish industrialised building system known as Jespersen (sometimes referred to as Jesperson). The company built factories in Scotland, Hampshire and Lancashire producing Jespersen prefabricated parts and precast concrete panels, allowing the building of housing to be rationalised, saving time and money. This site in Hulme was built in 1967 with parts supplied by the John Laing Concrete factory in Heywood. The slide is part of a batch taken to show building construction with 12M Jespersen factory made units and examples of window and link units, plus thermal roof material and fascia fittings

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the Jespersen flats in Hulme, Manchester. The image showcases a wall panel with inset windows being carefully hoisted into position by a crane, symbolizing the innovative building techniques employed during this era. In 1963, John Laing and Son Ltd acquired the rights to the Danish industrialized building system known as Jespersen. This acquisition led to the establishment of factories across Scotland, Hampshire, and Lancashire that produced prefabricated parts and precast concrete panels for housing construction. These advancements allowed for rationalization in building processes, resulting in both time and cost savings. The specific site depicted in this photograph was built in 1967 using components supplied by John Laing Concrete factory located in Heywood. The batch of slides from which this image is taken aimed to showcase various aspects of construction using 12M Jespersen factory-made units. It also highlights examples of window and link units, along with thermal roof material and fascia fittings. This historical snapshot not only provides insight into architectural advancements but also offers glimpses into life on-site during the 1960s. With workers diligently carrying out their tasks amidst towering cranes and bustling activity, it serves as a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration within the world of construction.
