Sectional view of a Newcomen steam engine, 1737
Sectional view of a Newcomen steam engine, 1737. Thomas Newcomen (1663-1729) designed his atmospheric or steam engine in 1712. Water was heated in the boiler and the resulting steam was let into the cylinder, pushing up the piston. The steam was then condensed, bringing down the piston. The piston rocked a beam which worked the pump. It was safer and more effective than the earlier Savery engine and was widely used to drain water out of mines. From Architecture Hydraulique by Bernard Forest de Belidor. (Paris, 1737)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a sectional view of a Newcomen steam engine, dating back to 1737. Designed by Thomas Newcomen in 1712, this atmospheric or steam engine revolutionized the mining industry during the Industrial Revolution. The intricate diagram reveals the inner workings of this remarkable invention. In the image, we see water being heated in the boiler, producing powerful steam that is then released into the cylinder. As the steam enters, it pushes up the piston with great force. Once its energy is spent, the steam condenses and brings down the piston again. This reciprocating motion sets off a chain reaction as it rocks a beam connected to a pump. Compared to its predecessor, Savery's engine, Newcomen's creation proved safer and more efficient for draining water out of mines. Its impact on industries across Britain and France cannot be overstated. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of authenticity to this historical artifact from Architecture Hydraulique by Bernard Forest de Belidor (Paris, 1737). It serves as both an engineering marvel and testament to human ingenuity during this transformative period in history. This thought-provoking print captures not only an important moment in technological advancement but also highlights how science and innovation can shape our world for centuries to come.
