Head of a Woman, c1739-c1744, (1928). Artist: Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

Head of a Woman, c1739-c1744, (1928). Womans head seen from in front and somewhat below, chalk on paper. Possibly a study for the ceiling painting in the Scuola del Carmine, Venice, Italy. At one time known to have been in the collection of Dr Hans Wendland, Lugano, Switzerland. Italian Venetian painter and printmaker Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770), worked not only in Italy, but also in Germany and Spain. He was commissioned to carry out frescoes in churches and palaces, and was elected President of the Academy of Padua. As well as his large-scale majestic works, he also produced etchings and oil paintings, and is widely regarded as one of the most important artists of the period. Illustration from The Drawings of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Volume II, by Detlev Baron Von Hadeln. [The Pegasus Press, Paris, 1928]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, a renowned Italian Venetian painter and printmaker. Titled "Head of a Woman" this piece is believed to have been created between 1739 and 1744, with the print itself dating back to 1928. The image depicts the head of a woman seen from the front and slightly below, drawn with chalk on paper. It is speculated that this drawing may have served as a study for one of Tiepolo's ceiling paintings in the Scuola del Carmine in Venice, Italy. The provenance reveals that it was once part of Dr Hans Wendland's collection in Lugano, Switzerland. Tiepolo's artistic talent extended beyond Italy; he also worked extensively in Germany and Spain. His impressive body of work includes frescoes adorning churches and palaces, oil paintings, etchings, and more. As President of the Academy of Padua, he held great influence within his field. Considered one of the most significant artists during his time period, Tiepolo's artistry exudes grandeur and majesty. This particular illustration comes from Volume II of "The Drawings of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo" by Detlev Baron Von Hadeln published by The Pegasus Press in Paris. With its striking monochrome composition capturing every intricate detail meticulously sketched by Tiepolo's hand, this print serves as a testament to his immense talent as an artist.
