EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Fanny Burney, a prominent figure in English literature during the late 18th century. The portrait, created by an unknown artist in 1943, is based on a painting by her cousin Edward Francis Burney and can be found at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Fanny Burney was not only known for her satirical novels but also for her diaries and plays. Born in 1752 as the daughter of renowned musicologist Dr Charles Burney, she went on to marry General d'Arblay, a French refugee, in 1793. Her three major novels - "Evelina" (1778), "Cecilia" (1782), and "Camilla" (1796) - solidified her reputation as a talented writer. In this portrait, Fanny exudes elegance with her fashionable attire adorned with fur accents. Her hat adds a touch of sophistication to her ensemble while emphasizing her status as an influential woman of the time. The oil painting beautifully captures Fanny's refined features and contemplative expression. This print serves as a window into both Fanny Burney's life and the social history of Britain during the 18th century. It is part of Kate O'Brien's book "English Diaries and Journals" published by Collins in London in 1943.
