Drake Attacking the Spanish Treasure Ship, c1578, (c1880) - A Glimpse into Sir Francis Drake's Daring Exploits

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print, we are transported back to the 16th century, witnessing a pivotal moment in history. The image depicts the legendary English sea captain and privateer, Sir Francis Drake, fearlessly attacking a Spanish treasure ship near Lima. With his audacious spirit and exceptional naval skills, Drake successfully seized a vessel laden with an astonishing 25,000 pesos of Peruvian gold. This remarkable haul equated to an astounding value of 37,000 ducats in Spanish currency - equivalent to approximately £7 million by today's standards. The monochrome engraving beautifully captures the intensity of the battle at sea as Drake's fleet engages with their heavily outnumbered adversaries. The dramatic scene showcases both the speed and power of sailing ships during this era. This historic artwork is part of "British Battles on Land and Sea". Volume I by James Grant. It offers us a glimpse into one of England's most celebrated maritime heroes' daring exploits against Spain during Elizabethan times. As we admire this print from Cassell Petter & Galpin publishers in London, Paris & New York circa 1880s; it serves as a reminder of Drake's significant contributions to British naval supremacy and his relentless pursuit for wealth and glory on treacherous waters.
