EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a rare and historically significant artifact - an intricately hand-coloured engraved sheet mounted on wood, depicting Europe divided into its Kingdoms in the year 1766. Measuring an impressive 453x480 cm, this remarkable piece is part of a private collection. What makes this particular artwork truly unique is that it represents one of the earliest known jigsaw puzzles ever created. Known as dissected maps, these puzzles originated from John Jefferys' "A Journey Through Europe" a map game published by Carrington Bowles in 1759. The puzzle has been meticulously dissected to form individual pieces, allowing players to reassemble the European map. Although not entirely complete (missing Corsica, Sardinia, Italy's heel, and with an ink mark on Spain), this near-complete condition adds to its rarity and allure. Its educational value cannot be overstated; through play and exploration of borders and countries, individuals can deepen their understanding of cartography and geography. As we gaze upon this fascinating artwork, we are reminded of the leisurely pastimes enjoyed during the Georgian era. This early example of a jigsaw puzzle serves as both a toy for entertainment purposes and a tool for learning about European geography. Through this photograph captured by eChristies Images in collaboration with Bridgeman Images, we are transported back in time to appreciate not only the beauty but also the historical significance behind this extraordinary piece of art.
