EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the distinguished figure of (Henry) Bartle (Edward) Frere, a renowned British colonial administrator. Born in Clydach, Breckonshire, Wales in 1815, Frere's remarkable career spanned across various regions and roles. Serving as the Governor of Bombay from 1862 to 1867, he left an indelible mark on Mumbai's history. However, it was his subsequent appointment as the governor of the Cape and High Commissioner in South Africa in 1877 that thrust him into controversy. Despite his initial acclaim for implementing reforms and infrastructure development during his tenure, Frere faced severe criticism for his treatment of the Zulu people. This led to his recall in 1880 amidst growing concerns over colonial policies. The colour-printed wood engraving captures both the strength and complexity of this influential figure who played a significant role in shaping British colonialism. Through this image, we are reminded of Frere's Welsh roots and how they influenced his approach to governance. It serves as a visual testament to an era marked by exploration, power dynamics, and cultural encounters between Britain and its colonies
