Red-shouldered ham beetle head, SEM

Red-shouldered ham beetle (Necrobia ruficollis) head, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Forensic entomologists study this beetle because it feeds on dead bodies. The beetle feeds on dried meat, so it does not feed on a corpse until around 2-4 months after death, when the body is beginning to dry out. They live for around 14 months and the female can lay 3000 eggs in that time. The seasonal activity of this beetle (it is active in summer) helps provide evidence for the season of death. Its compound eyes (green), antennae (stalks between eyes), mandibles and sensory palps are all seen. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a Red-shouldered ham beetle head, captured through a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The Red-shouldered ham beetle, scientifically known as Necrobia ruficollis, holds immense significance for forensic entomologists due to its feeding habits on deceased bodies. Interestingly, this beetle primarily consumes dried meat and only begins to feed on corpses approximately 2-4 months after death when the body starts to desiccate. Living up to 14 months, these beetles possess an astonishing reproductive capacity as females can lay up to 3000 eggs within that timeframe. Their seasonal activity during summer serves as valuable evidence in determining the time of death in forensic investigations. In this image, one can observe the compound eyes of the beetle adorned with shades of green along with its antennae protruding from stalks between those eyes. Additionally, their mandibles and sensory palps are also visible. The magnification level used in capturing this photograph remains unknown but it undoubtedly offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of these tiny creatures. With elements such as decomposition and pincers coming into play alongside mesmerizing colours and textures found on their hair-covered faces, this image encapsulates both natural beauty and scientific intrigue. It stands as a testament to how nature's smallest inhabitants can provide vital clues for crime research within the field of forensic entomology.
