EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Ptolemaic worldview as depicted in plate 2 of the renowned star atlas Harmonica Macrocosmica. Created by the brilliant Dutch-German mathematician and cosmographer Andreas Cellarius, this edition was published in Amsterdam by Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valk in 1708. The image beautifully illustrates the geocentric perspective held by the ancient Greek philosopher Ptolemy during the 2nd century. The Earth takes center stage, surrounded by celestial bodies such as the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn within its orbit. The intricate celestial circles and zodiac are also intricately displayed. Originally published in 1660 with Latin text accompanying each of its 30 color plates, Harmonica Macrocosmica remains a significant work of astronomical artistry. It provides a glimpse into humanity's understanding of our place within the vast universe during that period. This particular edition captures not only scientific knowledge but also historical context through its artistic representation. Its detailed illustration offers an insight into how people perceived space and astronomy during both the 17th and 18th centuries. With its rich history and cultural significance intertwined with scientific exploration, this artwork serves as a testament to human curiosity about our place in the cosmos. It stands as a tribute to both Andreas Cellarius' ingenuity and Claudius Ptolemy's influential contributions to cosmography.
