Mouse Mat : Clovis rock, Mars
Home Decor from Science Photo Library
Clovis rock, Mars
Clovis rock outcrop, Mars. Found in the Gusev Crater by NASAs Mars Exploration Rover Spirit, this rock is softer than the surrounding volcanic rocks. The rovers Rock Abrasion Tool (RAT) has been used to drill into it (centre left), and the rovers spectrometers were used to analyse it. They showed that there are higher levels of sulphur, bromine and chlorine than in the other rocks previously studied. A possible explanation for this may be that the elements were left as deposits from fluid flows in the past

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intriguing Clovis rock, a remarkable discovery made by NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit in the Gusev Crater. Standing out amidst the surrounding volcanic rocks, this particular rock formation exhibits a softer texture. The rover's Rock Abrasion Tool (RAT) has been employed to drill into it, revealing its hidden secrets. Through meticulous analysis using the rover's spectrometers, scientists have uncovered fascinating insights about Clovis rock. Compared to previously studied rocks on Mars, this enigmatic specimen displays significantly higher levels of sulphur, bromine, and chlorine. This peculiar composition raises questions about its origin and history. One plausible explanation for these elevated elemental concentrations is that they were left behind as deposits from ancient fluid flows on Mars. These findings shed light on potential geological processes that occurred in Martian history and provide valuable clues about the planet's past habitability. The image captures the essence of planetary science exploration as it showcases cutting-edge technology being utilized to unravel mysteries millions of miles away from Earth. With its striking visual appeal and scientific significance, this photograph serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about our neighboring celestial bodies within our vast solar system.
