Romanian Troops attacking Ghemesh Station, Austro-Hungaria

Illustration showing the surprise attack launched by Romanian troops on Ghemesh railway station in Austro-Hungaria, 1916. On the first day of hostilities between these two countries the Romanians asked that a Hungarian train might be fetched back from Romania. The Hungarians thought it would be full of grain and agreed, sending a steam engine to collect it. On its return to Austro-Hungaria the train stopped at Ghemesh station, only to reveal a large cargo of Romanian soldiers rather than grain - a modern day Trojan Horse

EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration depicts the unexpected and pivotal moment during the Romanian campaign of World War I, when Romanian troops launched a surprise attack on Ghemesh railway station in Austro-Hungaria on December 7, 1916. In the early stages of hostilities between the two countries, the Romanians had requested that a Hungarian train be allowed to return to Romania to fetch back a grain shipment. The Hungarians, believing the train would be carrying much-needed grain, agreed and sent a steam engine to collect it. However, upon the train's return to Austro-Hungarian territory, it stopped at Ghemesh station, revealing a shocking surprise. Instead of grain, the cargo hold was filled with a large number of Romanian soldiers, disguised as a modern-day Trojan Horse. This tactic caught the Hungarian forces off guard, marking a significant turning point in the war. The Romanian troops, led by General Constantin Prezan, sprang from the train and attacked the unsuspecting Hungarian garrison, resulting in a decisive victory for the Romanians. This historical event is depicted in this illustration, showcasing the strategic brilliance and determination of the Romanian forces during the First World War.
