EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph depicts the Ko-i-Staun Foot Soldiery in their summer costumes, actively employed among the rocks. Part of a series of 30 colored lithographs titled "The costumes of the various tribes, portraits of ladies of rank, celebrated Princes and Chiefs, views of the principal fortresses and cities and interior of the cities and temples of Afghaunistaun," this print was created by R Carrick after Lt. James Rattray of the 2nd Grenadiers, Bengal Army. The intricate detail and vibrant colors bring to life the rugged terrain and the determined stance of the Ko-i-Staun foot soldiers. Dating back to circa 1842, this print is an invaluable historical record of the 1st Afghan War (1838-1842). The soldiers, dressed in their summer uniforms, are shown in a natural setting, blending seamlessly with the rocks and boulders, as they go about their duties. The series, published by Hering and Remington in London and printed by Day and Son, offers a unique glimpse into the culture and daily life of the people of Afghanistan during this tumultuous period in history. The lithographs in this series provide a visual representation of the diverse tribes, costumes, fortresses, cities, and temples of Afghanistan, offering a rich and detailed account of the region and its people. This particular print, with its striking image of the Ko-i-Staun Foot Soldiery in summer costume, is a testament to the skill and artistry of the artists and publishers of the time, and a valuable addition to any collection of historical prints or military memorabilia.
