EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking colored engraving depicts a pivotal moment in Parisian history: the Expulsion of the Capuchin Fathers from their Convent of the Rue de la Sante in 1880. The Capuchin Order, a branch of the Franciscan tradition known for their distinctive brown robes and simple lifestyle, had long been a fixture in the city's religious landscape. However, their convent on the Rue de la Sante, located in the heart of Paris, had become a source of controversy. High society, influenced by the secularization of French society under the Third Republic, pressured the government to close the convent due to its proximity to the red-light district. The engraving captures the chaotic scene as the Capuchin friars, dressed in their brown habits, are forcibly removed from their home by a crowd of onlookers. The women in the crowd, some clad in elegant 19th-century attire, appear curious and excited, while the clergymen and ecclesiastics in the background look on with a mix of sadness and resignation. The expulsion of the Capuchin Fathers from their convent was a significant blow to the Catholic Church in Paris and marked the end of an era. The event underscores the complex relationship between religion, society, and the state during this period in French history. Despite the challenges faced by the Church, the faith and devotion of the Capuchin Order continued to inspire generations of believers, both in Paris and beyond.
