EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, members of the Cornish Gorsedd, a modern-day community of bards, take part in the Sword of Arthur ceremony at St Just in Cornwall. Established in 1928, the Gorseth Kernow (Gorsedd of Cornwall) was set up to preserve and promote the national Celtic spirit of Cornwall. The bards, dressed in traditional robes and cloaks, gather around the Sword of King Arthur, an important symbol of Cornish history and legend. During the ceremony, the bards take an oath of loyalty to "Cornwall our Motherland," reinforcing their commitment to the preservation of Cornish culture and traditions. As the bards touch the Sword of Arthur by placing one hand on the shoulder of the bard in front, they symbolically connect with the rich history and heritage of their ancestors. The Cornish Gorsedd is a vibrant and creative community that celebrates the arts, literature, music, and the Celtic spirit of Cornwall. The bards, who are initiated through a rigorous selection process, are dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Cornish traditions and customs. The Gorseth ceremony is just one of the many ways in which the Cornish Gorsedd celebrates the unique cultural heritage of Cornwall. This photograph, taken in the 1980s, captures the essence of the Cornish Gorsedd and the deep connection its members have to their land and their heritage. It is a testament to the enduring power of tradition and the importance of preserving the rich cultural heritage of Cornwall.
