A donkey and cart in Market Square, St Just in Penwith, Cornwall. Early 1900s

Market Square (or Commercial Square) with the Wellington Hotel in the background. There are four carts in the picture. The horse drawn cart has a boy driver, while on the donkey cart the young boy has the reins in his hands, but is being supervised by the old man wearing an old fashioned patched farm smock. The young girl on the left is wearing a white smock over her clothes and shading her eyes from the sun to look at something across the square. What looks like a market stall is behind the cart with wicker baskets as its load. Part of the A.K. Hamilton Jenkin collection. Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the early 1900s transports us to Market Square in St Just, Penwith, Cornwall. The bustling scene showcases a snapshot of daily life in this charming town. In the background stands the iconic Wellington Hotel, a testament to the enduring history of this place. The focal point of the image is undoubtedly a donkey cart, with its young driver holding onto the reins tightly. However, it is heartwarming to see an old man wearing a patched farm smock supervising him attentively. This intergenerational bond symbolizes tradition and wisdom being passed down through generations. Onlookers are drawn to this lively sight; even a young girl on the left takes pause from her activities to observe something across the square. She wears a white smock over her clothes as protection from both sun and dust - an attire common for children during that era. Intriguingly, behind one of four carts lies what appears to be a market stall loaded with wicker baskets brimming with goods waiting for eager customers. It serves as a reminder of how vital these markets were for local communities back then. Preserved as part of A. K Hamilton Jenkin's collection at Royal Cornwall Museum, this photograph captures not only an ordinary day in St Just but also reflects Cornish heritage and family values that have stood strong throughout time.
