EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the moment when Han Yu, the Prince of Literature, boldly presents his Memorial in protest against an Emperor's decision to honor a bone of Buddha with Imperial honors during the T'ang Dynasty. The scene is filled with tension and emotion as Han Yu stands firm in his beliefs, despite facing banishment to the wilds of Kuangtung for his defiance.
Henry Charles Seppings Wright skillfully brings this historical event to life through intricate detailing and expressive characters. The contrast between Han Yu's determined expression and the looming figure of the Emperor creates a powerful visual narrative that draws viewers into this pivotal moment in Chinese history.
As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded of the courage and conviction displayed by Han Yu as he stood up for what he believed was right, even at great personal cost. His legacy lives on through this striking image, serving as a timeless reminder of the importance of speaking truth to power.
