The Spitzer Cross
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a remarkable piece of art that captures the essence of religious devotion and exquisite craftsmanship. Created by the Master of the Royal Plantagenet Workshop in 12th century France, this enameled cross stands as a testament to the skill and talent of its creator. Named after Baron Frederic Spitzer, an esteemed Viennese art dealer and collector who owned it in the 19th century, this cross has been hailed as one of the finest examples of Limoges enamel work to have survived. Its vibrant colors and intricate detailing showcase the refined craftsmanship that went into its creation. The figure of Christ on the cross is rendered with precision and delicacy. The white enamel highlights every contour, from his rib cage to his muscles, creating a striking contrast against his halo, loincloth, and the vivid green, blue, and yellow hues used for these elements. The inscription on titulus reads "IHS XPS" further emphasizing its Christian significance. This cross serves as a powerful symbol of faith and devotion for believers around the world. Now housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this print allows us to appreciate not only its beauty but also its historical importance. It reminds us that even centuries later, art continues to inspire awe and reverence through its timeless appeal.
