Jooss interferometer

Jooss interferometer. This device, engineered by Zeiss and Scott, was designed and operated by the German physicist Georg Joos (1894-1959). Joos used it to carry out a Michelson-Morley experiment in 1930, obtaining more accurate results than the original 1881 experiment. Both results showed that light does not travel faster or slower relative to a moving Earth. This led to Einsteins postulate that the speed of light is the same for all moving objects, which was the basis of his 1905 theory of Special Relativity. The experiment bounces beams of light back and forth along the interferometer arms. When aligned with the Earths motion around the Sun, the expected differences in path length of the beams failed to appear

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Jooss interferometer, captured in this print from Science Photo Library, stands as a testament to the groundbreaking work of German physicist Georg Joos. Designed and operated by Zeiss and Scott, this remarkable device played a pivotal role in Joos' Michelson-Morley experiment of 1930. Intriguingly, Joos' results surpassed the accuracy achieved by the original 1881 experiment. Both experiments conclusively demonstrated that light does not vary its speed relative to a moving Earth. This profound revelation paved the way for Einstein's postulate that the speed of light remains constant for all objects in motion—a cornerstone principle underlying his revolutionary theory of Special Relativity formulated in 1905. The Jooss interferometer functions by bouncing beams of light back and forth along its arms. When precisely aligned with Earth's movement around the Sun, it was expected that differences in path length would emerge. However, these anticipated variations failed to materialize during Joos' experiment. This instrument represents an extraordinary milestone in physics research during the early 20th century. It challenged prevailing notions about ether and provided crucial evidence supporting Einstein's concept of an invariant speed of light—an idea that forever transformed our understanding of space, time, and motion. As we gaze upon this image capturing scientific history unfolding before our eyes, we are reminded once again how human ingenuity continues to unravel nature's mysteries through relentless exploration and experimentation.
