Computer artwork of stages in a stars life
Life of a star. Computer illustration of stages in the life of a star like our own Sun. The star is born (upper right) from the gravitational contrac- tion of a cloud of gas (nebula). Bipolar jets can be seen coming from the centre of the stars accretion disc. Due to the contraction, the temperature of the gas increases until it triggers the nuclear fusion of hydrogen atoms to become a star (lower centre). After all the hydrogen has been used up the star swells to become a red giant (far left). Eventually the outer layers are shed exposing the helium-rich core of the star which becomes a white dwarf (lower right)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This computer artwork showcases the various stages in the life of a star, similar to our own Sun. Starting from the upper right corner, we witness the mesmerizing birth of a star through gravitational contraction of a gas cloud known as nebula. As if dancing with cosmic energy, bipolar jets emanate from the center of the stars' accretion disc, adding an ethereal touch to this celestial spectacle. As time progresses and gravity continues its work, the temperature within the gas cloud rises exponentially until it triggers nuclear fusion. This transformative process causes hydrogen atoms to fuse together, marking the birth of a magnificent star at its lower center position. However, like all things in nature, nothing lasts forever. Once all its hydrogen fuel has been depleted, this stellar entity expands into a red giant (far left), engulfing everything in its path with fiery brilliance. Eventually shedding its outer layers and revealing its helium-rich core beneath (lower right), it transforms into what is known as a white dwarf—a serene yet powerful remnant of once-burning cosmic glory. Through this stunning piece of artistry by Science Photo Library, we are reminded that even stars have their own journey—evolving and transforming over millions or billions of years—an awe-inspiring testament to both scientific wonder and artistic imagination.
