Coloured SEM of the mitral valve of a human heart

Mitral valve of heart. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the mitral valve of a healthy human heart. The mitral valve is one of the atrio- ventricular valves which channels the flow of blood from the left atrium into the left ventricle and prevents any backflow. At top (white) is the mitral valve attached by tendonous cords (chordae tendineae) to a papillary muscle at lower left. Papillary muscles open and close the valve, while the valves curved surface enables a one way flow of blood. Pink tissue at lower frame is muscle of the ventricle. At top right (pink) is the heart surface. Magnification: x130 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x170 at 4x5 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the mitral valve, a vital component of the human heart. In this coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM), we are granted a close-up view of a healthy mitral valve in all its glory. The mitral valve acts as one of the atrio-ventricular valves, skillfully directing blood flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle while preventing any unwanted backflow. At first glance, our attention is drawn to the top portion of this image where we find the white-colored mitral valve attached by tendonous cords known as chordae tendineae to a papillary muscle situated at lower left. These papillary muscles play an essential role in opening and closing the valve, ensuring proper circulation within our cardiovascular system. The curved surface of this remarkable valve allows for efficient one-way blood flow, optimizing its function within our bodies. As we shift our focus downwards, pink tissue representing muscle fibers can be observed at lower frame - these belong to the ventricle. To complete this visual masterpiece, we glimpse a section of pink heart surface on top right which adds depth and context to this microscopic marvel. With magnification levels reaching x130 at 6x7cm size or x170 at 4x5 inch size, every minute detail has been captured with precision and clarity. This extraordinary photograph serves as a testament to both scientific advancement and artistic appreciation for nature's wonders found within us all.
