Coloured MRI brain scan showing lissencephaly
Lissencephaly. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a brain (purple/pink/yellow/blue) with lissencephaly (smooth brain). The brain is seen in horizontal (axial) section, with the front of the brain at top. Normally the outer surface of the brain is heavily folded, but here it is smoother and the fluid-filled ventricles (pink, lower left & right) are greatly enlarged. People with lissencephaly are mentally handicapped and have uncoordinated movements. They also have a greatly reduced life expectancy. MRI uses radio waves and a powerful magnet to produce slice images of the body

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured MRI brain scan, revealing the distressing condition known as lissencephaly. The image portrays a smooth brain in vibrant shades of purple, pink, yellow, and blue. Normally, the outer surface of the brain exhibits intricate folds; however, in this case, it appears remarkably smoother. Additionally, the fluid-filled ventricles are visibly enlarged and appear as striking patches of pink in the lower left and right corners. Lissencephaly is a debilitating disorder that profoundly affects individuals' mental capabilities and motor skills. Those afflicted with this condition experience mental handicaps and struggle with uncoordinated movements. Tragically, their life expectancy is significantly reduced due to these severe impairments. The creation of this image involved employing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology alongside radio waves and a powerful magnet to generate detailed slice images of the human body. By utilizing such advanced medical techniques, healthcare professionals can gain invaluable insights into various diseases and conditions affecting our brains. This remarkable photograph serves as an educational tool shedding light on lissencephaly's devastating impact on individuals' lives while emphasizing the crucial role played by modern medicine in diagnosing such disorders accurately. Science Photo Library has once again captured both scientific precision and artistic beauty within this thought-provoking visual representation of an intricate medical anomaly.
