Autonomous underwater vehicle (Autosub)
Autosub, an autonomous underwater vehicle owned by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), being launched in Antarctic waters. Autosub was developed and built by a team of engineers at Southampton Oceanograpy Centre and was first launched in 1996. It is capable of long unassisted forays under sea ice and ice shelves. It can make oceanographic and geophysical measurements and then return to its mothership unaided. In the Antarctic it can obtain a detailed and widespread view of conditions and processes beneath the ice shelves. The picture was taken by D. Vaughan, part of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) team

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (Autosub) being launched into the icy waters of Antarctica. Owned by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Autosub was meticulously developed and constructed by a team of skilled engineers at Southampton Oceanography Centre, making its maiden voyage in 1996. This cutting-edge technology is specifically designed to operate autonomously under sea ice and ice shelves for extended periods without human assistance. Equipped with advanced oceanographic and geophysical measurement capabilities, Autosub ventures deep beneath the Antarctic's frozen surface to provide an extensive and detailed view of conditions and processes occurring beneath the vast ice shelves. Its ability to navigate underwater independently allows it to gather crucial scientific data before returning unaided to its mothership. The photograph, taken by D. Vaughan from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) team, captures this groundbreaking moment as Autosub is carefully lowered into the frigid waters using a towering crane-like derrick. The image beautifully portrays both the immense scale of this technological feat and the serene beauty of Antarctica's pristine environment. With its robotic prowess, Autosub represents a significant milestone in marine exploration and research. It exemplifies how advancements in unmanned technology are revolutionizing our understanding of Earth's oceans while pushing boundaries in oceanography and geophysics research fields.
