Lord Kitchener was Secretary of State for War when World War One was declared on August
Lord Kitchener was Secretary of State for War when World War One was declared on August 4th 1914. Lord Kitchener had been a career soldier and did not believe that the war would be over by Christmas 1914. Kitchener informed the Cabinet of his views. He believed that World War One would last between three and four years and that the UK would have to mobilise millions of men if the war was to be won. It was a remarkably accurate prophecy.
In May 1916, Kitchener received an invite from Nicholas II, Tsar or Russia, to visit Russia and advise him on military matters. On June 5th Kitchener set sail from Scapa Flow for Russia on the cruiser " HMS HampshireO. At about 19.00, the " HampshireO hit a German mine and sunk in 15 minutes. 643 out of the 655 on board drowned or died of hypothermia. Kitchener was among the dead.. Circa 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed Lord Kitchener, Secretary of State for War during the declaration of World War One on August 4th, 1914. A seasoned career soldier, Lord Kitchener held a unique perspective on the war's duration and its demands on the United Kingdom. Informed by his extensive military experience, he boldly predicted that this conflict would endure between three to four years and necessitate the mobilization of millions of men for victory. Astonishingly, his prophecy proved remarkably accurate. In May 1916, an invitation from Tsar Nicholas II of Russia beckoned Lord Kitchener to offer his invaluable counsel on military matters. Setting sail aboard the cruiser "HMS HampshireO" from Scapa Flow towards Russia on June 5th, anticipation filled the air. However, tragedy struck when their vessel was tragically struck by a German mine at approximately 19:00 hours. The "HampshireO" succumbed to its watery grave within a mere fifteen minutes, claiming all but twelve lives out of the total 655 souls onboard. Among those lost was none other than Lord Kitchener himself. This poignant image serves as both a tribute to Lord Kitchener's significant contributions and a somber reminder of the sacrifices made during this tumultuous period in history. It encapsulates an era characterized by serious resolve and unwavering commitment amidst war and conflict—a testament to one man's indelible mark upon our collective memory.
