EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage print from April 1979, we see Scotland's Communist prospective parliamentary candidates gathered in Glasgow. Among them is Raymond Mennie, who appears slightly disgruntled as he holds a poster with his name misspelt as "Meanie." Despite the error, Mennie stands proudly alongside his fellow candidates - Jimmy Sneddon, Alex Maxwell, Carol Downes, David McDowell, Sam Barr, Danny McCafferty, June Tait, John Kay and Bill.
This snapshot captures a moment in history when these individuals were vying for political office under the banner of the Scottish Communist Party. Their dedication to socialist ideals and commitment to working-class values are evident in their determined expressions and united front.
As they pose for this photograph, one can sense the camaraderie and solidarity that binds them together in their pursuit of social justice and equality. Each candidate brings their unique perspective and passion to the table, ready to fight for a better future for all Scots.
Despite the minor mishap with Mennie's name on the poster, it is clear that these individuals are undeterred in their mission to represent the interests of working people in Scotland. This image serves as a reminder of a time when political activism was at its peak and voices of dissent were not afraid to be heard.
