GLC-LFB - Former County Brigade pump fire engine

The GLC-LFB was created on 1 April 1965. A series of photos was commissioned of each type of fire engine, either within or absorbed into the enlarged London Fire Brigade. The pump from Barnet fire station (J29) seen here can only be used as a pump: it could not carry a pump-escape ladder. Barnet was in the Hertfordshire Fire Brigade prior to 1965 and in many cases only the older fire engines were transferred into the enlarged London Fire Brigade

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Blast from the Past: The Historic GLC-LFB Pump Fire Engine from Barnet Fire Station (J29) This evocative photograph captures the essence of firefighting history with the depiction of a former County Brigade pump fire engine from Barnet Fire Station (J29), now part of the Greater London Council-London Fire Brigade (GLC-LFB). The image was taken during a series of photographs commissioned in 1965 to document each type of fire engine that was either within or absorbed into the enlarged London Fire Brigade. The vintage fire engine in the photo is a testament to the rich heritage of firefighting in London. Prior to 1965, Barnet Fire Station (J29) was part of the Hertfordshire Fire Brigade. In the aftermath of the London Government Act 1963, older fire engines like this one were transferred into the GLC-LFB. Noticeably, this pump fire engine from Barnet Fire Station (J29) is specifically designed for pumping water, making it an essential piece of equipment during fires. However, it is crucial to highlight that it lacks the capability to carry a pump-escape ladder. This limitation is a reflection of the era in which it was originally used. The photograph not only showcases the vehicle's historical significance but also transports us back to the 1960s, a time when the fire service was undergoing significant changes. The GLC-LFB's creation on 1 April 1965 marked a pivotal moment in the history of London's firefighting services, as the various county brigades were amalgamated into a unified force. This photograph is an excellent reminder of the evolution of firefighting vehicles and the role they play in protecting our communities. It is a snapshot of history that continues to inspire and inform the modern firefighting services we have today.
