EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases John Henderson in the iconic role of Iago from William Shakespeare's play Othello. Created in 1786, this stipple engraving and etching is a remarkable representation of Henderson's portrayal of the villainous character. The third state sheet measures 9 1/8 x 5 3/4 inches (232 x 146 cm) and features a clipped impression. After Gilbert Stuart, an American painter known for his expressive features, captured the essence of Iago on canvas, Bartolozzi based this engraving on Stuart's work. It beautifully captures Henderson's powerful performance as Iago during his time at Covent Garden Theatre between 1780 and 1785. John Henderson was an acclaimed actor whose talent shone through in his interpretation of complex characters like Iago. Born in North Kingston, Rhode Island in 1755, he later moved to Boston, Massachusetts. This print was published shortly after Henderson's death as a tribute to his exceptional acting skills. Gilbert Stuart lived in London from 1775 to1793 and became well-known for his paintings during that time. His collaboration with Bartolozzi resulted in this stunning depiction of John Henderson as Iago. This print serves as a testament to both the artistic talents involved and the enduring legacy of John Henderson's portrayal of one of Shakespeare's most memorable characters.
