HMS Agamemnon laying the original Atlantic telegraph cable, 1857 (1866). Artist
HMS Agamemnon laying the original Atlantic telegraph cable, 1857 (1866). HMS Agamemnon was the first warship to be built with screw propulsion. After being converted she was involved in the first attempts to lay the transatlantic telegraph cable in 1857-1858. The third attempt succeeded but the cable only remained operational for a few weeks before its insulation deteriorated. The cable would not be permanently established until the Great Eastern accomplished the task in 1866. From The Atlantic Telegraph by William Howard Russell, published 1866

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the historic moment when HMS Agamemnon played a pivotal role in laying the original Atlantic telegraph cable in 1857. As the first warship to be equipped with screw propulsion, she embodied technological innovation and marked a significant advancement in naval engineering. In this vibrant print, we witness the crew of HMS Agamemnon diligently working amidst billowing smoke and steam as they navigate the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The ship's stern proudly displays its name, symbolizing Britain's maritime prowess during the 19th century. Robert Dudley, an accomplished artist, skillfully brings this scene to life with his meticulous attention to detail. His use of color adds depth and vibrancy to every element depicted - from the majestic vessel itself to the surrounding aquatic life that thrives beneath its hull. The image serves as a testament not only to human ingenuity but also highlights how technology revolutionized global communications. Although this particular attempt at laying a transatlantic telegraph cable was met with initial setbacks due to insulation deterioration, it paved the way for future success. Sir William Howard Russell's publication "The Atlantic Telegraph" further immortalizes this groundbreaking achievement by providing valuable insights into this remarkable feat of engineering and communication. As we gaze upon this lithograph today, we are reminded of our ancestors' determination and perseverance in connecting continents through telecommunications. It stands as a tribute to those who dared to dream big and forever changed how information traverses across oceans.
