Copper mine or quarry, near Montreal, Canada - from a sketch by our special artist... 1860. Creator: Unknown

Copper mine or quarry, near Montreal, Canada - from a sketch by our special artist, G. A. Andrews, 1860. Excitement due to the...discovery of an immense deposit of copper ore in the hillside near the village of Acton, Canada East...Excursion-trains run from Montreal expressly to visit the mines; and, as the proprietor makes a charge for admission...he is likely to make a rich harvest of gold and silver, as well as of copper, by his discovery...The face of a considerable hill has been laid open, and what appears a large stone quarry is being worked by about a hundred men, who are continually blasting with gunpowder, and using all the ordinary means for getting out blocks of dark grey stone, which, on a closer examination, will be found to be good rich copper ore...the whole mass of the hill appears to be of the same valuable material...The overburden is a yellow loamy sand, about eight feet thick, immediately under which is the metal-bearing rock...At the excavation the roots of the trees can be seen penetrating through the loam into the cracks and fissures of the rock which carries the metal. The yield of copper is eleven tons of ore, carrying 20 per cent of copper, for every cubic fathom of rock excavated'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this sketch by G. A. Andrews, published in the Illustrated London News in 1860, we are transported back in time to a significant discovery near the village of Acton, Canada East. The excitement was palpable as word spread of an immense deposit of copper ore found in the hillside, igniting a wave of curiosity and wonder among the local community and beyond. Excursion trains ran directly from Montreal to the mines, eager visitors drawn by the prospect of witnessing this natural marvel firsthand. The proprietor, no doubt, anticipated a lucrative return on his investment, as the demand for copper was high and the potential yield seemed boundless. As we gaze upon the image, we see a considerable hillside laid bare, revealing what appears to be a large stone quarry. However, upon closer inspection, the men at work are not extracting stone but rather, rich copper ore. About a hundred laborers toil tirelessly, blasting the rock with gunpowder and employing standard mining techniques to extract blocks of the dark grey ore. The entire hillside seems to be composed of the same valuable material, with an overburden of yellow loamy sand, approximately eight feet thick, concealing the treasure beneath. Even the roots of the trees penetrate the loam, reaching into the cracks and fissures of the copper-bearing rock. The yield of copper is impressive, with eleven tons of ore, carrying 20% copper, extracted for every cubic fathom of rock excavated. This remarkable find, captured in Andrews' sketch, showcases the allure and promise of the natural world and the human ingenuity that drives us to uncover its hidden treasures.
