5920190 View of City, from Signal Tower looking West, 1880 circa (b/w photo) by Simpson, Benjamin (1831-1923); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: View of City, from Signal Tower looking West, 1880 circa.
Photograph by Benjamin Simpson (1831-1923), 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1880 circa.
Kandahar, in south-east Afghanistan, had been captured by the British without a struggle on 8 January 1879. Until the summer of 1880 the occupation was relatively uneventful but following Ayub Khans victory at Maiwand on 27 July, the Kandahar force was besieged. The siege was lifted when Major-General Sir Frederick Roberts led a force from Kabul to Kandahar. Despite the difficult terrain and the high temperatures he covered 280 miles (400 km) in 20 days and hardly lost a man. On 1 September 1880 he defeated Ayub Khan outside Kandahar and relieved the garrison.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a breathtaking view of a city from the Signal Tower, looking west, in 1880. Taken by Benjamin Simpson during the 2nd Afghan War, this image provides a glimpse into Kandahar, a city located in southeast Afghanistan. The British had captured Kandahar without much resistance in January 1879 but faced challenges when Ayub Khan emerged victorious at Maiwand on July 27th. As a result, the British forces found themselves besieged until Major-General Sir Frederick Roberts led his troops from Kabul to relieve them. In this photo print, we witness the remarkable topography surrounding Kandahar as seen from the Signal Tower. The tower itself stands tall and sturdy against an expansive sky. Its significance lies not only in its role as a communication hub but also as an emblem of resilience amidst challenging circumstances. Simpson's composition skillfully captures both the grandeur of the cityscape and the ruggedness of its surroundings. The contrasting shades of black and white add depth to every detail - from distant buildings to rolling hills. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot, we are transported back to a time when technological advancements were limited yet human determination prevailed. This photograph serves as a testament to courage and triumph over adversity – reminding us that even amidst conflict, beauty can be found within our world's most unexpected places.
