Bee Hummingbird Mounted Print Collection

Bee Hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae) is a species of hummingbird native to Cuba and Isla de la Juventud, and is the smallest bird in the world, measuring only 5 cm in length and weighing 2 g. Its wingspan is 8 cm, and its bill length is 0.8 cm, metallic green back, white underparts, and a red throat patch with black streaks on either side. It feeds mainly on nectar from flowers but also eats small insects for protein. During breeding season it builds cup-shaped nests made of plant material and spider webs near flowering plants or shrubs where it can find food easily. The female lays two white eggs which she incubates alone for 15–18 days until they hatch into chicks that fledge after 21–23 days of care from their mother, and are found mainly in Cuba but have been spotted as far away as Florida due to migration patterns or storms that carry them off course during their travels across the Caribbean Sea.
