EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph, published in 1892, showcases the beauty and diversity of various butterflies from the Sphingidae family. Each delicate creature is meticulously depicted with intricate details that bring them to life. In the top left corner, we are introduced to the Elephant hawk moth (Deilephila elpenor), presented in two stages of its transformation. On the left side, a vibrant caterpillar can be seen while on the right side, a breathtaking butterfly spreads its wings. Moving clockwise, we encounter the Lime hawk-moth (Mimas tiliae) with three distinct phases captured within this artwork. From a leaf-munching caterpillar to an elegantly wrapped pupa and finally emerging as a graceful butterfly. Next comes the Eyed hawk-moth (Smerinthus ocellata), portrayed as both a caterpillar and fully developed butterfly. Its distinctive eye-like markings add an element of intrigue to its appearance. The Poplar hawk-moth (Laothoe populi) follows suit with its own journey from caterpillar to butterfly showcased beautifully on this print. The Hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) takes center stage next, displaying not only its caterpillar form but also capturing it during metamorphosis as it transforms into a pupa before ultimately becoming an enchanting butterfly. Lastly, we have the Broad-bordered bee hawk-moth (Hemaris fuciformis). This species is presented in all three
