Water wheel

Water wheel, 19th century design plans. This type is known as a compound water wheel as it uses both the undershot and breast wheel principles. The double-fronted sluice (lower left) simultaneously admits water to the base (undershot) and center (breast wheel), allowing more water to fill each section (cut-away F) thus turning the wheel with a greater force. The volume of water could be adjusted with the mechanism at upper left (K), which could change the flow of water. At this time water wheels were used to grind corn, raise water and power machinery. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable 19th-century design plan of a water wheel, known as a compound water wheel. Combining the principles of both undershot and breast wheels, this ingenious creation harnessed the power of flowing water with unparalleled efficiency. The intricate details reveal a double-fronted sluice in the lower left corner, which ingeniously admitted water to both the base (undershot) and center (breast wheel) simultaneously. This clever mechanism allowed for more water to fill each section, resulting in an increased force that turned the wheel with exceptional strength. The volume of water could be finely adjusted using the mechanism located at the upper left corner, marked as 'K'. By altering the flow of water, this versatile system served multiple purposes during its time - grinding corn, raising water, and powering machinery. It is truly fascinating to witness how such historical engineering marvels were instrumental in shaping British industry and sustainable practices. Taken from "The Circle of Sciences" published in London between 1862-7, this colored illustration provides us with valuable insights into our rich history of science and technology. As we admire this historical artwork today, let us appreciate not only its aesthetic beauty but also recognize it as a testament to human ingenuity that has paved the way for modern advancements in irrigation systems and energy production.
