Voltas battery. Historical illustration of the battery (or pile) made by the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) in 1800. This was the first battery capable of supplying a continuous current. It was made of alternating discs of copper and zinc, separated by porous cardboard saturated with salt solution. This invention made Volta famous, and he was awarded the medal of the Legion of Honour and made a count by Napoleon. The unit of electrical potential (volt) was named in his honour
