Eta Carinae as seen by HST after repair mission
Optical image of the Eta Carinae nebula as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) after the servicing mission which took place in December 1993. Eta Carinae is a massive (150 solar masses), eruptive variable star (bright at very centre) which has expelled a large amount of gas. This has led to the formation of a two lobe nebula, mainly formed by dust, which shows a granular surface with clumps of gas with sizes comparable to that of our solar system. The red outer glow is mainly composed of nitrogen and other elements formed in the interior of the star and subsequently ejected into interstellar space

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the awe-inspiring beauty of Eta Carinae, a massive and volatile star located in the Carina Nebula. Taken by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) after its repair mission in December 1993, this optical image reveals intricate details of this celestial wonder. Eta Carinae, with its immense size equivalent to 150 solar masses, shines brightly at the very center of the frame. The star's explosive nature has resulted in an extraordinary phenomenon - the formation of a two-lobed nebula composed mainly of dust. This nebula exhibits a fascinating granular surface adorned with clusters of gas that rival our entire solar system in size. The outer glow surrounding Eta Carinae is bathed in a mesmerizing red hue, primarily consisting of nitrogen and other elements synthesized within the star's core before being expelled into interstellar space. This image not only showcases the sheer magnificence and complexity present within our universe but also provides valuable insights into stellar evolution and cosmology. It serves as a testament to humanity's continuous exploration and understanding of distant celestial objects. Thanks to Science Photo Library for capturing this breathtaking moment through their lens, allowing us all to marvel at the wonders that lie beyond our earthly realm.
