Claudius Ptolemaeus, Greek astronomer

Claudius Ptolemaeus (Greek: Κλαύδιος Πτολεμα-ος Klaudios Ptolemaios; (c. AD 90 - c. 168), known in English as Ptolemy, was a Roman citizen of Egypt who wrote in Greek. He was a mathematician, astronomer, geographer, astrologer and a poet of a single epigram in the Greek Anthology. He lived in Egypt under Roman rule, and is believed to have been born in the town of Ptolemais Hermiou in the Thebaid. He died in Alexandria around AD 168. Ptolemy was the author of several scientific treatises, at least three of which were of continuing importance to later Islamic and European science. The first is the astronomical treatise now known as the Almagest "The Great Treatise", "Mathematical Treatise"). The second is the Geography, which is a thorough discussion of the geographic knowledge of the Greco-Roman world. The third is the astrological treatise known sometimes in Greek as the Apotelesmatika more commonly in Greek as the Tetrabiblos, and in Latin as the Quadripartitum (or four books) in which he attempted to adapt horoscopic astrology to the Aristotelian natural philosophy of his day. This woodcut was printed around 1590

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Claudius Ptolemaeus, a prominent Greek astronomer who made significant contributions to the fields of mathematics, astronomy, geography, astrology, and even poetry. Born in Egypt during Roman rule around AD 90, Ptolemy's intellectual prowess flourished in Alexandria until his passing in AD 168. Renowned for his scientific treatises that profoundly influenced later Islamic and European science, Ptolemy authored several notable works. The first is the Almagest or "The Great Treatise" an astronomical masterpiece that delves into celestial observations and mathematical calculations. His second work is the Geography—a comprehensive exploration of Greco-Roman geographical knowledge. However, it was through his astrological treatise known as the Tetrabiblos or Quadripartitum that Ptolemy aimed to harmonize horoscopic astrology with Aristotelian natural philosophy prevalent at the time. This remarkable woodcut print from around 1590 by Detlev van Ravenswaay beautifully captures the essence of this esteemed scholar. It serves as a testament to Ptolemy's enduring legacy and his profound impact on our understanding of ancient astronomy and geography.
