Boring a hole

Boring a hole. Historical artwork of workers using a steam-powered boring device to dig a deep hole. One worker is turning the shaft between each stroke so that the cutting device hits all parts of the rock face. Such devices were often used to find coal seams for subsequent mining. The bottom of the bore-hole is kept filled with water so that the debris removed by the percussion of the chisel can be lifted by a pump. Taken from Mines and Miners, L. Simonin, 1868

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork captures the essence of industrial progress in the 19th century. In this sepia-toned print, we witness a group of Victorian workers diligently operating a steam-powered boring device to excavate a deep hole. The scene showcases the ingenuity and determination of these men as they employ cutting-edge technology to search for coal seams, crucial for subsequent mining operations. One worker stands out among the rest, turning the shaft between each stroke with precision so that the cutting device can effectively penetrate every part of the rock face. This method ensures thorough exploration and maximizes productivity in their quest for valuable resources. To facilitate efficient debris removal, water fills the bottom of the bore-hole. As chisel strikes remove fragments from within, a pump lifts them away. This ingenious technique demonstrates how science and engineering were harnessed to optimize mining processes during this era. The illustration by L. Simonin is not just an artistic masterpiece but also serves as a testament to human innovation and perseverance throughout history. It offers us a glimpse into an important chapter in our technological evolution where steam engines revolutionized industries like mining.
