Artwork showing how to locate the Pole Star
Artwork showing how to locate the Pole Star, or Polaris. Polaris is situated between the prominent constellations of the Plough or Great Bear (Ursa Major) & Cassiopeia, which is in the form of a W. From northern latitudes, these constellations are above the horizon throughout the year. They are shown here as they appear at midnight on June 21, Midsummers Day. The two end stars of the Plough act as pointers that lead directly (red arrow) to Polaris. The Pointers are Dubhe (nearest to Polaris) & Merak. Also shown, in the " handle" of the Plough, is the binary star system of Mizar & Alcor, which is visible to the naked eye. Mizar is the brighter of the two

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork beautifully illustrates the celestial dance that guides us to the Pole Star, Polaris. Situated between the majestic constellations of Ursa Major and Cassiopeia, Polaris serves as a steadfast beacon in our night sky. In this mesmerizing print, created by Science Photo Library, we witness these constellations as they appear at midnight on June 21st, Midsummer's Day. The Plough or Great Bear takes center stage with its distinctive shape resembling a ladle. Its two end stars, Dubhe and Merak, play the role of loyal pointers leading us directly towards Polaris. As we follow their guidance along the red arrow depicted in this artwork, we are guided to our celestial destination. But there is more wonder to behold within this cosmic masterpiece. Nestled within the handle of the Plough lies a binary star system known as Mizar and Alcor. Visible even to the naked eye, Mizar shines brighter than its companion Alcor. Through this enchanting visual representation by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of humanity's age-old fascination with navigating through the vastness of space using nothing but our own observations and understanding of nature's wonders above. This artwork not only showcases astronomical knowledge but also invites us to gaze upon it with awe and curiosity for what lies beyond our earthly realm.
