Huge crowds gathered in a Walthamstow street when the pantomime cat from Dick Whittington

Huge crowds gathered in a Walthamstow street when the pantomime cat from Dick Whittington at the Palace Theatre, Walthamstow, made an ascent by rope up the front of the theatre. The local traders complained that the crowds obstructed their stalls and prevented Christmas trade being done and the police were called. They spoke to the manager of the theatre and also to the " cat" played by Miss Desta, who is a stunt girl for American films and also a trapeze artist. She is the smallest cat in the panto business - 3ft. 9ins. high and weighs 5 stone. December 1953 D7638-001

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the incredible scene that unfolded in a Walthamstow street during the festive season of December 1953. The Palace Theatre's production of Dick Whittington had taken an unexpected turn when the pantomime cat, played by the talented Miss Desta, embarked on a daring ascent up the front of the theater using only a rope. The spectacle drew enormous crowds from all corners, transforming the usually quiet street into a bustling hub of excitement and anticipation. However, not everyone was thrilled by this impromptu performance. Local traders voiced their grievances as they found their stalls obstructed and feared that their Christmas trade would suffer. As tensions rose, authorities were called to intervene and restore order amidst this delightful chaos. The police took it upon themselves to speak with both the theater manager and Miss Desta herself - an accomplished stunt woman for American films and trapeze artist extraordinaire. It is worth noting that Miss Desta's portrayal of the pantomime cat was truly remarkable given her petite stature - standing at just 3 feet 9 inches tall and weighing a mere 5 stone. Her presence added an element of humor and charm to this beloved character. This vintage photograph serves as a nostalgic reminder of times gone by when entertainment came alive on our streets, bringing joy to young and old alike.
