EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Monument to the Indian Maharajah, located at the eastern end of Florence's Parco delle Cascine in Tuscany, Italy. The monument, officially known as Monumento all'Indiano, is a tribute to Rajaram Chhatrapati Maharajah of Kohlapur, a young Maratha ruler from India who died in Florence at the age of 20 while on a visit to London in 1902. The monument, sculpted by American artist Charles Francis Fuller II, depicts the Maharajah as a bust on a small pedestal, seated under a baldachino with a small dome. The intricate details of the Maharajah's traditional Indian attire and the ornate decorations on the monument are beautifully captured in this photograph. Rajaram Chhatrapati was a member of the Bhonsle Dynasty, one of the most prominent Maratha dynasties in India. His untimely death in Florence led to a special permission being granted by the Italian Council of Ministers for his cremation on the banks of the Arno River. This photograph, taken in the early 1900s, provides a glimpse into the rich cultural exchange that took place between Italy and India during that era. The monument stands as a testament to the historical connections between the two countries and serves as a reminder of the fascinating stories that lie hidden in the streets and parks of Florence.
