EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph from the 1930s, His Royal Highness Prince George, later the Duke of Kent, is seen in the elegant company of Lady Charles Cavendish, formerly known as Miss Adele Astaire, at the Debutantes Ball in 1933. The Debutantes Ball was an annual social event in London, where unmarried debutantes from aristocratic and high society families were presented to the King and Queen, and Prince George, as a member of the royal family, was a regular attendee. Lady Charles Cavendish, born on May 20, 1898, was the elder sister of the legendary dancer and actor Fred Astaire. Adele Astaire began her own dancing career in the late 1910s and early 1920s, partnering her brother in various productions on both sides of the Atlantic. She retired from the stage in 1932 to marry the 10th Earl of Charles Cavendish, and the couple are seen here at one of the most prestigious events of the London social season. Prince George, born on December 20, 1902, was the youngest son of King George V and Queen Mary. He served in the Royal Navy during World War II and later became the Duke of Kent in 1942. The photograph captures a moment of grace and elegance, as the young prince engages in conversation with the charming and sophisticated Lady Charles Cavendish, against the backdrop of the opulent decor of the Debutantes Ball. This image offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of royalty and high society in the 1930s, a time of glamour, elegance, and social refinement. The photograph is a testament to the enduring allure of the Debutantes Ball, and the role it played in shaping the social landscape of the era.
