EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts two exquisite species of Morel mushrooms, Morchella vulgaris and Morchella costata, from the Atlas des Champignons by Leon Rolland published in Paris, 1910. The illustration was created by A. Bessin and beautifully rendered by Lassus. Morels are highly prized in the culinary world for their unique, savory flavor and distinctive honeycomb-like cap. Morels, belonging to the Morchellaceae family, are among the most sought-after wild mushrooms due to their elusive growth habit and short seasonal availability. They typically emerge in spring after the last frost, in areas disturbed by wood decay, making them a true treasure for foragers. Morchella vulgaris, commonly known as the common morel, is the most widely distributed and consumed morel species. Morchella costata, also known as the black morel or costate morel, is less common and has a darker, more textured cap. The intricate details of the cap structures and the vibrant colors of the gills are masterfully captured in this chromolithograph, providing a beautiful representation of these elusive and delicious fungi. The Atlas des Champignons was a groundbreaking work in mycology, showcasing over 1,000 species of mushrooms and other fungi from France, Switzerland, and Belgium. This image is a testament to the rich biodiversity of these countries and the dedication of Leon Rolland and his collaborators to documenting the natural world.
