EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the determination and resilience of the English Army as they embark on their arduous three-month march towards Magdala in Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) during the Abyssinian War of 1867. The British forces were on a mission to rescue hostages held by the Abyssinian Emperor Tewodros II. The rugged terrain of the North African country presented a formidable challenge to the soldiers, who were required to navigate steep and mountainous regions. The soldiers, a mix of infantry and cavalry, are seen here making their way up a particularly difficult incline, with some men leading their horses and oxen, while others push heavy wheels and climb alongside. The use of elephants as pack animals adds to the scene's exotic and otherworldly feel. Despite the difficult conditions, the troops press on, their faces set with a determined expression. They are armed with rifles and bayonets, ready for any encounter they may face. The soldiers' uniforms, though worn and faded, still bear the insignia of the British Army, a testament to their unwavering commitment to their cause. The advance of the English Army towards Magdala was a slow and painstaking process, with the troops often having to contend with treacherous terrain, scarce water supplies, and the threat of enemy attacks. Yet, they persevered, driven by their duty to their country and the desire to bring home the hostages held by Tewodros II. This photograph offers a glimpse into the grit and tenacity of the soldiers who braved the challenges of the African wilderness to complete their mission.
