This evocative image captures the determination and resilience of the English Army as they embark on their arduous three-month march towards Magdala in Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) during the Abyssinian War of 1867. The British forces were on a mission to rescue hostages held by the Abyssinian Emperor Tewodros II. The rugged terrain of the North African country presented a formidable challenge to the soldiers, who were required to navigate steep and mountainous regions. The soldiers, a mix of infantry and cavalry, are seen here making their way up a particularly difficult incline, with some men leading their horses and oxen, while others push heavy wheels and climb alongside.
