EDITORS COMMENTS
Albert I of Habsburg, also known as Albertus Austriacus, is depicted in this magnificent 17th-century copperplate engraving from Abraham Bogaerts' "De Roomsche Monarchy" or "The Roman Monarchy." Born in 1255, Albert was the Duke of Austria and the King of Germany. He was a significant figure in European history, serving as a key player in the Holy Roman Empire during the late Middle Ages. The engraving showcases Albert in regal attire, seated on a throne, with the imperial insignia of the Holy Roman Empire in his hands. He is shown holding the imperial scepter and sword, symbols of his power and authority. The imperial crown rests on a table beside him, further emphasizing his royal status. Albert's armor, adorned with intricate designs, adds to the grandeur of the image. The background of the engraving is adorned with classical motifs, including the Caesars and Kaisers, reflecting the historical and cultural significance of the Holy Roman Empire. The token coin, a common element in imperial portraits, is also visible at Albert's feet. Albert I of Habsburg's reign was marked by political instability and conflict, particularly with his rival, Henry VII of Luxembourg, who also claimed the title of King of Germany. Despite these challenges, Albert managed to maintain the integrity of the Habsburg lands and strengthen the position of the Habsburg dynasty. This stunning copperplate engraving, produced in Utrecht in the late 17th century, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and power of the Holy Roman Empire during the Middle Ages. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of Albert I of Habsburg and his role in European history.
