This nineteenth century drawing, created during the height of the European fascination with Asian flora, showcases the bright and cheerful sunflower in all its glory. John Reeves (1774-1856), a British trader and botanical artist, compiled this extensive collection of botanical drawings during his time in China from 1812 to 1835. The collection, which includes over 1,500 drawings, is a testament to Reeves' keen observation skills and his dedication to documenting the diverse flora of Asia. The sunflower, a member of the Asteraceae or Compositae family, is an angiosperm, a type of flowering plant that produces enclosed seeds. It is a dicot, meaning it has two cotyledons, or seed leaves, and is part of the Eudicot clade, which includes a large number of flowering plants. The sunflower is also an Asterid, a subclass of the asterids, and belongs to the order Asterales. The sunflower is native to North America and is now widely cultivated for its edible seeds and oil.
