The monument, designed by Emilio Gallori and completed in 1895, honors the Italian military and political leader who played a pivotal role in the Italian unification and the Risorgimento, or resurgence, of Italy as a modern European nation. Garibaldi, born in 1807, was a charismatic figure and a symbol of patriotism and revolutionary spirit. He gained fame for his leadership in the Carbonari, a secret society dedicated to the overthrow of foreign rule in Italy. Garibaldi's most notable military campaigns were the Expedition of the Thousand, in which he led a volunteer army to conquer Sicily and southern Italy, and the Battle of Monterotondo, where he defeated the Papal forces. The monument depicts Garibaldi on horseback, dressed in the red shirt of his volunteer army, the Redshirts.
