EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Micronesian Imperial-Pigeon, scientifically known as Ducula oceanica, a native bird species endemic to the Micronesia region in the western Pacific Ocean. The image is taken from Prideaux John Selby's volume "Pigeons" in Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, published by W.H. Lizars in Edinburgh in 1835. The illustration was created by the renowned English artist Edward Lear, who is best known for his literary nonsense and illustrations. The Micronesian Imperial-Pigeon, also referred to as the Oceanic Fruit-Pigeon or the Carpophagus Oceanicus, is a large and striking bird, with iridescent green and purple plumage, a white underbelly, and a distinctive red eye. The species is omnivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, and insects. They are social birds that live in groups and are known to roost communally in trees. This engraving is a testament to the remarkable natural history illustrations produced during the 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors capture the beauty and elegance of the Micronesian Imperial-Pigeon, providing a window into the natural world of the past. The image also serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the world's diverse bird species, many of which are facing threats from habitat loss, hunting, and climate change.
